Clicks Group HR Director, Bertina Engelbrecht is proud that her 11-year tenure at Clicks has enabled her to contribute at Board level to the creation of an enabling environment where the HR division plays a meaningful role in building the capability required to meet the business’ imperatives. “Attracting the right talent is vital for the future of the business and collectively, we take this issue seriously.”
She explains that Clicks’ employee value proposition aims to provide its people with unlimited opportunities. “The retail environment is one of the few industries in which committed, talented individuals can progress from the shop floor to the boardroom. Both our current and former Heads of Clicks started their careers on the shop floor and progressed to the executive level. It is just a matter of grasping the opportunities for development that we offer.”
To begin with, Clicks is one of the largest healthcare bursary providers.
“We offer up to 100 bursaries to students in pharmacy alone each year,” she says. “Our internship target is 100 interns per annum and we have a fantastic store manager and commercial development programme. At any point, we have 500 people on our accredited learnerships. We also invest in a Leadership Acceleration Programme where talented employees are fast tracked. In all of our programmes, employees are supported to become the best they can be.”
Bertina is very proud of Clicks’ Employee Share Ownership Programme which holds 10% of the company’s issued share capital in trust as an equity-settled scheme for employee beneficiaries.
“The programme was implemented in 2011, to enable our employees to share in the growth and success of the business. The current value, which is in excess of R2.2 billion, will fundamentally change the lives of our employees,” she says.
Knowing she can make a difference is Bertina’s daily inspiration. “Just recently, we offered a young graduate a permanent position and she cried tears of happiness – not about the job offer, but what it would mean for her and her family,” Bertina explains. “I love knowing that we nurture people. We are a performance-driven organisation, yet we maintain a strong sense of belonging and of being part of a family.”
