In the CORE Technology rotational program, Emily combines her love for art and technology through programming 3D animation and storytelling. At the same time, she upholds her commitment as a Public Affairs Officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
Describe your background and interests.
I've always been captivated by special effects in film and the intersection between art and technology. I chose to study computer science pretty blindly in college, and while I enjoyed it, found that it didn’t quite fulfill my creative side. As a result, I enrolled in 3D animation, videography, and photography classes. I began to see how my two interests could come together through computer programming and artistic design.
How did you get your start at Comcast NBCUniversal?
I learned about the company during a Grace Hopper Women in Computing conference when a recruiter introduced me to the CORE Technology rotational program. The organization was looking for students with both strong technical skills and leadership experience. In addition to my computer science background, I was part of the ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps), which provided leadership and management skills training. After learning how much Comcast NBCUniversal respected and supported military employees, I realized the program was a great opportunity for me. My current rotation is with the Comcast Experience Design, Emerging Platforms team.
Can you describe a cool project you’ve worked on?
One of my favorite projects was developing a “skill” for the Amazon Echo, an Alexa-enabled device. Alexa is a voice interface capable of playing music, making your to-do lists, setting your alarms, and providing other real-time information. When NBCUniversal Media Labs partnered with Syfy, we developed a skill that allows Alexa to answer questions about upcoming shows and behind-the-scenes information. It was the first time an entertainment network launched an Alexa skill, and represented how Media Labs works with new technologies, as well as partners with other Comcast NBCUniversal groups to make those prototypes a reality.
