As a journalism major, Nicholas was unsure if accounting would be a good fit, personally or professionally. At Grant Thornton, he found an inclusive and supportive culture.
What drew you to Grant Thornton?
As a junior, I participated in Grow with Grant Thornton, a summer leadership program that gave me a glimpse into the firm and a taste of the accounting field in practice. I mentioned to one of the senior leaders that I wasn’t sure if accounting was the right fit for me. Not only was she understanding, but my relationship with Grant Thornton continued after the program as team members checked in with me and helped me learn more about the field. I saw that senior leaders were actually invested in both my career, and my happiness – this encouraged me to join the team.
What sets Grant Thornton apart as a place to work?
As a gay man entering the business world, I didn’t know what to expect. Yet from day one, I’ve been encouraged to live out Grant Thornton’s mission to “grow your whole self.” The culture here fosters authenticity, and creates a safe and dynamic space for growth, which allows you to develop meaningful connections with peers and leaders.
How has the company empowered you to grow?
My involvement in the Out & Equal Workplace Summit reflects how much Grant Thornton invests in its people. The summit is an annual meeting where experts gather to share best practices in workplace equality, inclusive of sexual orientations and gender identities. Grant Thornton is a proud sponsor and sends representatives every year to attend, which I did. To be able to attend the summit so early in my career was incredible, and empowered me to take on leadership roles and know I’m not getting lost in the corporate shuffle.
Any career advice for young professionals?
There's a misperception that only a few companies in the industry offer opportunities for advancement. I've participated in amazing initiatives I wouldn't have gotten, or would've had to wait for at other firms, because Grant Thornton is large enough to provide great opportunities, but small enough to support you as an individual.
