What surprised you most when you joined?

I was taken aback by how much learning is embedded into the culture and infrastructure. I have access to Mars University where I can take courses at the Marketing College, Sales College, or Leadership College. If I wanted to learn a completely new skillset, I'm encouraged to join classes during Associate Development Month.

How does Mars provide opportunities for growth?

The Starburst® brand marketing team is lean. Big decisions are made at my level and my voice is heard. Mars also provides me with support through their 70:20:10 development philosophy. This framework suggests that 70% of your learning is on the job, 20% through mentorship, and the other 10% through your independent pursuit of information and skills.

What project are you most proud of?

My journey to where I am in corporate America has made me passionate about developing diverse talent. I became involved in our partnership with Management and Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) just after I joined Mars. MLT equips diverse candidates with skills and coaching to thrive in business school and their careers. My work led me to be a finalist for the Make the Difference Award, a global award that Mars gives to recognize Associates who put The Five Principles into action and have a personal commitment to improving our communities. I’m thrilled that we now have a strong diversity recruiting team and our partnership with MLT is a best-in-class partnership.

How does your work tie into a larger purpose?

Mars prioritizes its people and its community above all else, through activities like off-sites, happy hours, and community service activities. For the past 2 years, my team has organized a trick-or-treat day for inner-city children. What started off as a team event rippled throughout the entire company. We lay out mountains of candy, transform the conference room into a zombie tomb, and have more than 80 kids come play. Having grown up in inner-city Chicago, I’m passionate about connecting with the community around us and grateful that Mars provides those opportunities.
